A permanent challenge for researchers and cutting tool industry is to further improve the tool life, reducing its wear and prolonging is high performance to produce a high quality surface finish of a machined product. Many improvements have been done in this direction, namely by modifying geometry, finishing and surface coatings.

This project is concerned with the development of the multi-material concept, with specific application on multi-functional cutting tools by using tungsten carbide (WC), titanium carbide (TiC), polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (CBN) ligated with Cobalt-based alloys. Besides the development of new alloying elements additions to the Cobalt-based alloys, the key innovative approach is the creation of temperature sensors and heat extraction channels inside the cutting tools, by using multi-material selective laser melting. These two “printed” elements will be connected to the tool holder by contact points, with one extracting/conducting heat from the cutting region, and the other measuring constantly the in service temperature and transmitting this information to a micro-processing unit inside the tool holder, and further down the line transmitting this information by using a wireless communication system integrated in the tool holder.

This project proposes a pioneering concept, with new approaches regarding new materials functions in different locations and the use of innovative technologies to produce the multi-layer components. Since the concept includes different areas of knowledge, only a multidisciplinary research team, with research and industrial backgrounds will be able to validate the concept in real components - making this project to succeed.
